Terranova.com">Newfoundlands are prone to hip dysplasia (a malformed ball and socket in the hip joint), Elbow dysplasia, and cystinuria (a hereditary defect that forms calculi stones in the bladder). Another genetic problem is subvalvular aortic stenosis, also referred to as subaortic stenosis or SAS. This is a common heart defect in Terranova.com">Newfoundlands involving defective heart valves. The dog retrieved a rope thrown out into the turbulent waters by those on deck, and brought the rope to shore to people waiting on the beach. Noted Newf handler and devotee Gerlinde Hockla passed away in the early AM on Monday 12/29/2008.
Gerlinde V. Hockla, 73, of Ashford, wife of William Hockla, died Monday, December 29, 2008 at their home. She was born June 2, 1935 in Mannheim, Germany, the daughter of Phillip and Gertrude (Dumbeck) Tonn and had lived in Ashford since 1955. She was a professional dog handler and had shown dogs all over America and Europe. Gerlinde was the handler of the first Terranova.com">Newfoundland to win Best in Show at the Westminster Kennel Club Show in Madison Square Garden. She was a member of the Professional Handlers Association and held memberships in the Terranova.com">Newfoundland Club of America, the Terranova.com">Newfoundland Club of New England, the German Shepherd Club of America, was a charter member of the German Shepherd Club of Eastern Connecticut, and a member of the German Shepherd Club of Germany for over 30 years and a charter member of the Nathan Hale Obedience Club. She and her husband were also breeders of German Shepherds and Labrador Retrievers. In addition to her husband she is survived by a sister, Edeltraud Laurin of Ashford, two nieces and a nephew, Janina Laurin and her husband George Snyder of Danbury, Darlene Laurin of Waterford and Theodore Laurin of Williamsport, PA.

Newfoundlænderen (også kaldet newfen) er typisk sort, men brune newfer findes også. I Danmark er newfen og og den sort/hvide landseeren to forskellige racer, men i andre lande er landseeren bare en farvevariant. Der findes også enkelte grå newfer.
Newfen er en stor hund, en velvoksen han kan blive 85 cm høj og veje over 80 kilo.

Til trods for dens størrelse spiser en newf ikke en masse og kræver heller ikke enorme mængder motion.
Dens lange pels kræver en del pleje. Den skal børstes jævnligt, helst dagligt, for at holde sig pæn og fri for filt. En newf slæber også uanede mængder snavs med sig, og den fælder som alle andre hunde. Der er bare mere og længere pels at fælde. Mange newfer savler en hel del, og når den ryster sig kan der ende savl på loftet. Så der er altså en del rengøring forbundet med at have en newf.
En newf foretrækker kulde og vil helst være ude det meste af tiden. Men det er samtidig en nysgerrig og social hund, der helst vil være sammen med familien.

Newfen stammer fra Terranova.com">Newfoundland på den canadiske østkyst. I starten af 1880'erne sejlede mange europæiske fiskere til Terranova.com">Newfoundlandsbankerne, for at fange torsk. På bankerne var der to typer hunde, en kraftig langhåret og en mindre, mere aktiv, korthåret. Den kraftige var newfoundlænderen, den mindre var labradoren. Begge hunde blev brugt til at trække fiskenet i land. De europæiske fiskere tog hunden med tilbage til Europa.
Der er flere teorier om hvordan racen opstod. Nogle mener at den stammer fra blandinger mellem sorte ulve og tibetanske mastiffer. Andre mener at den har udviklet sig fra hunde som vikingerne efterlod omkring forrige årtusindeskifte. En tredje teori er at den stammer fra europæiske opdagelsesrejsendes hunde.

Il proviendrait du mélange des chiens autochtones (Béothuks) de Terre-Neuve avec les gros «chiens d'ours» noirs introduits par les Vikings vers 1001. Jusqu'en 1610, les chiens des pêcheurs européens (parmi lesquels les mastifs portugais[4]) contribuèrent a modifier la race mais sans en changer la nature fondamentale. Depuis 1610, la race est telle qu'on la connaît aujourd'hui[5]. Les amérindiens Béothuks utilisaient sa force de traction pour tirer les claies lors de leurs déplacements saisonniers. Au fil des siècles, il se révéla très utile aux pêcheurs terre-neuviens dont il tractait les petites carrioles remplies de poisson (il existe un timbre canadien qui le représente tirant la petite charrette du Père Noël). On prétend même qu'il les accompagnait à la pêche et qu'il repêchait les poissons échappés du filet lors du relevage et même les pêcheurs passés par-dessus bord, ce qui serait à l'origine de sa vocation actuelle : le sauvetage aquatique. Il parait même que les terre-neuves sont capables de tirer jusqu'à une tonne dans l'eau ! Il est apparu en Europe au retour des pêcheurs de morue français et basques revenant des Grands Bancs. Caractéristiques générales [modifier] Le terre-neuve a la particularité d'avoir les pattes palmées, une fourrure épaisse et huileuse, et un sous-poil dense l'aidant à résister au froid et facilitant la flottaison. C'est un chien d'une très grande fidélité et d'un caractère exceptionnel. Doux, généreux, intelligent, patient, c'est un bon compagnon pour les enfants. Sa force impressionnante et sa vitalité en font un excellent gardien jamais dangereux. C'est un chien polyvalent qui possède des dispositions naturelles pour le sauvetage. Il est doté d'un corps puissant, musclé et harmonieux, son ossature est charpentée mais sans lourdeur excessives. Il mesure environ 71 cm pour plus de 65 kg ; la femelle, 66 cm pour 55 kg environ. Sa robe au poil long et plat, imperméable à l'eau, dense et lustrée, est généralement de couleur noire ou bronze ou noir et blanche. Les couleurs grise ou marron et blanc que l'on peu croiser de temps à autres ne sont pas des couleurs reconnues par la FCI donc non accepté à la confirmation. Sa tête est massive avec un crâne large, son front et sa face lisse et tout cela sans rides. Son museau est court, ses yeux sont bien bruns. Le terre-neuve est calme et obéissant, aussi il s'éduque facilement. Le terre-neuve est morphologiquement "fini" vers l'âge de 4 ans et nous pouvons aussi dire qu'il est adulte mentalement au même âge. Un terre-neuve de deux ans est encore un grand chiot, pataud, qui ne connait pas bien son corps et n'est pas toujours maitre de ses mouvements. Il faut savoir que l'âge le plus dur d'un terre neuve est de 2 à 6 mois, âge où il teste son nouveau foyer. Mais ce n'est pas un chiot destructeur, il teste plus en faisant celui qui n'entend pas où se bute à ne pas vouloir exécuter un ordre. De six mois à vingt quatre mois c'est un bébé très sage dans un corps de grand, qui n'arrête pas de pousser, et dont les points de repère changent sans arrêt. Par contre c'est un chien têtu . Ce chien est enfaite très calin ( généralement ) . Standards de la race en France [modifier] Selon son origine il ne faut pas confondre le landseer avec le terre-neuve. En effet, les lignées occidentales interdisent la reproduction du landseer avec le terre-neuve noir et blanc[réf. nécessaire]. En résumé, en Europe le landseer est une race à part : il est le cousin du terre-neuve (plus fin et haut sur pattes avec une liste blanche sur la tête). Le terre-neuve gris ou dit bleu n'est également pas reconnu en France. Suivant le pays certains critères sont retenus. On retiendra que pour la France le terre-neuve peut être noir, marron ou noir et blanc et que le landseer est une race différente. Pour plus de précision consulter le site du Club français du chien Terre-Neuve, le CFCTN. Standards de la race au Canada [modifier] La couleur traditionnelle est le noir. Le noir avec une teinte de bronze est permis, de même que quelques taches blanches. Toute tache autre que blanche est très répréhensible et entraîne la disqualification du sujet. Le Terre-Neuve landseer est blanc avec des taches noires et est d'importance historique pour la race. De préférence, le landseer doit posséder une tête noire avec une flamme blanche s'étendant sur le museau, une selle, une croupe et une portion supérieure de queues noires. Toutes les autres parties du corps doivent être blanches avec un minimum de mouchetures. La symétrie des taches et la beauté des motifs caractérisent les beaux landseers. On les expose dans les mêmes classes que les sujets noirs sauf si on a prévu des classes spéciales pour eux[5]. Santé [modifier] Maladies silhouettenelles de l'os. Cette race est particulièrement susceptible, de par sa corpulence, à la dysplasie de la hanche et la dysplasie du coude), maladies d'origine héréditaires mais où interviennent des facteurs environnementaux tels que la nourriture, l'exercice forcé, les sauts, montées d'escaliers, etc. La croissance du chiot terre-neuve doit donc être lente, il lui faut une alimentation de qualité, ni trop grasse, ni trop riche en protéines. Cystinurie, maladie héréditaire causant des pierres dans la vessie. Malformations congénitales (sténoses, shunts). Excès de bave, quoique plus un problème pour le propriétaire que pour le chien. Aujourd'hui, les éleveurs sérieux testent les reproducteurs pour détecter plusieurs de ces maladies. Le ipotesi sulle origini di questa diffusissima razza sono molte. Molti farebbero risalire il Terranova ai cani da orso portati in America dalle navi dei Vichinghi. Altri invece ritengono che si sia evoluto a partire dai cani asiatici legati al Mastino del Tibet arrivati nelle Americhe assieme alle popolazioni che attraversarono lo Stretto di Bering durante la glaciazione.
Questo cane veniva impiegato nella caccia, per il traino, per la pesca e anche per la guardia ai villaggi. È molto probabile che entrambe le teorie siano valide: infatti il sangue dei cani importati dai Vichinghi si potrebbe essere successivamente incrociato con quello dei cani appartenenti alle popolazioni nomadi provenienti dall'Asia, dando vita al progenitore dell’attuale Terranova, razza oggi molto diffusa, conosciuta e apprezzata.
Ancora tra il XVIII ed il XIX secolo esisteva tra le isole canadesi del nord-atlantico una razza denominata Cane di Terranova e Labrador)" href="/wiki/St._John%27s_(Terranova_e_Labrador)">St. John, utilizzata dai pescatori per il recupero delle reti e per il salvataggio in acqua, ma anche dai cacciatori per il riporto. La razza è soprattutto famosa per la sua caratteristica di amare l'acqua. È spesso utilizzato per un lavoro da bagnino nel quale ormai è stato addestrato talmente a fondo da diventare quasi fondamentale nelle spiagge. Esistono poche razze altrettanto amichevoli. Infatti difficilmente reagisce con rabbia a una situazione a meno che non ci sia un reale pericolo per il padrone. In questa occasione fa valere la sua stazza e la sua potenza.
Razza che si affeziona moltissimo al proprio padrone. Il suo istinto al salvataggio è così forte che talora può salvare anche chi non ne ha bisogno. Cane delicato nei primi mesi di vita, ma molto robusto da adulto. Deve essere tenuto in giardino per la grande mole. Adora nuotare. Cane ideale da far convivere con altri animali. Ama molto giocare con i bambini.

Per la sua grande stazza è necessaria una dieta forte, ricca di proteine che lo aiutino a sopportare il proprio peso. Generalmente l'alimento base coincide con un chilo di carne e 400 grammi di riso, verdure, da dividere nei due pasti della giornata. Consigli particolari attengono alla pulizia del manto. Spazzolare in modo appropriato il Terranova serve, infatti, a mantenere il pelo con le sue caratteristiche di resistenza all'acqua e allo sporco. Una spazolatura errata rischierebbe di togliere questa qualità caratterizzante.

O terra-nova é uma raça de cães natural do Canadá. Com pelagem longa e de cores variadas (preto, bronze e landseer), têm como característica a pelagem impermeável, devido ao gosto por água. Acredita-se que é uma das origens do labrador.
É proveniente da província de Terra Nova, Canadá. Nos países de língua inglesa, são conhecidos como Terranova.com">Newfoundlands, e apelidados de Newfies.

Aparência
Os terras-novas têm patas com membranas nadatórias e possuem um pêlo resistente a água. Os machos pesam entre 60–70 kg (130–150 lbs), e as fêmeas entre 45–55 kg (100–120 lbs), o que os coloca na classe de peso "gigante".
A maioria dos terras-novas são pretos, mas existem variedades marrons, cinzas, com manchas brancas e pretas, e Landseer (cabeça preta, corpo branco com manchas pretas). O nome Landseer foi dado depois que o artista sir Edwin Landseer os exibiu em muitas das suas pinturas. Alguns clubes de cães consideram o Landseer como uma raça separada; outros os consideram como uma variação de cor dos terras-novas. Alguns outros clubes ainda consideram os com manchas brancas e pretas serem fora do padrão da raça, não permitindo estes serem exibidos.
O terra-nova é similar em tamanho, forma, e tipo do pêlo com o cão de montanha dos Pirinéus, exceto que estes são usualmente brancos e os terras-novas são usualmente pretos. O terra-nova Landseer e o cão da montanha Pirineu com malhas negras no seu pêlo são difíceis para um leigo diferenciar.
Temperamento
Terras-novas tem uma tendência dócil e calma. De fato, a descrição do AKC (clube de cães americano) diz "Doçura no temperamento é a marca do terra-nova; essa é a característica mais importante da raça." Eles são protetores das crianças.
História
A origem da raça é incerta, mas ela era usada como cães de trabalho na ilha de Terra Nova no começo do ano 1000 d.C. Terras-novas eram usados para resgates na água e para trabalhos de puxar. A raça quase se tornou extinta; a maioria dos terras-novas dos dias de hoje traçam sua linhagem à apenas um cão com nome de Siki que viveu na década de 1920.

A cadela Nana no Peter Pan de James Matthew Barrie era originalmente uma terra-nova. (Donos de Terras Novas recentem a representação dela como uma são-bernardo no desenho da Disney; o filme Em Busca da Terra do Nunca de 2004 usou um cão de montanha dos Pirinéus).
Não oficialmente, a segunda mais importante característica da raça é a tendência à babar.
